WEEK 1

Spirituality and Imagination:

Cultivating a Sense of Wonder

By Fr. Jack Conley, CP

This fifteen-minute reflection invites the listener to ponder the role of imagination in their personal spirituality. Through a series of narrated stories Fr. Jack insists upon the necessity of cultivating a sense of wonder — stretching beyond our routines, and surely beyond our comfort zones — if one is to experience the virtue of hope today.

Reflection Questions

Spirituality and Imagination: Cultivating a Sense of Wonder

1. List the names of people who have, at different times of your life, altered your vision. Perhaps this was a coach who believed in you, maybe a teacher who “turned on a light” for you, or a friend in high school who first communicated compassion.

2. How is grace rubbing against you now? How is God trying to expand your horizons? …stretching the poles of your tent? …pushing your “comfort zone”? (e.g., racism, poverty, immigration, family responsibility, inner healing)

3. What tools are you now making use of to stretch your imagination, expand your vision? (e.g., spiritual direction or counseling, books or theatre, depth conversations with a good friend, or the grace of matrimony)

4. Imagine a continuum or a scale of one to ten. How good are you at verbalizing your care or affection for another? What is your “intimacy quotient” at this time of your life?

5. Spiritually, emotionally… how full is your bank account at this time of your life? Is the vessel brimming, or half empty? What “works” to replenish you? (How do you “re-fill” the vessel of your spiritual / emotional bank account? What works?)
